The new motorcycle market performed well last year. In 2024, the number of new motorcycles continued to increase to 28,330 units, an increase of + 11.7% (2,971 units) compared to 2023 and even +14.8% (3,647) more than in 2022. This makes 2024 the best of the past 15 years.
The most popular brand was Honda (4,159 units), followed by Yamaha (3,425), BMW (3,322), Kawasaki (2.289), and Piaggio (1,572). The Japanese brands in the top 5 made strong progress, while the European brands lost market share. Also striking: all engine sizes gained ground, except for the heaviest class of +1,000 cc.
Antwerp
December was also an excellent month (1,734 registrations, +181%), which can be explained by the abundant last-minute registrations of the remaining Euro 5 engines.
Flanders remains the largest region, with 69.4% of Belgium’s total sales of new motorcycles. Wallonia accounts for 34.7% and Brussels 5.9%. In West Flanders, we see an increase of +79.2%, but we also see nice data in Walloon Brabant (+10.0%), Flemish Brabant (+9.2%), and Luxembourg (+9.1%). In absolute figures, Antwerp remains at the top with 3,980 units, ahead of East Flanders with 3,415 units.
Second-hand market
The second-hand motorcycle market also performed +5.9% better than in 2023, with 59,974 units. However, the real reference point was 2022, before the introduction of the second-hand inspection.
As a consequence, the market has fallen -26.4%, which makes a difference of more than 21,000 engines. Usually, these old(er) and less expensive vehicles were exported to avoid Belgium’s mandatory second-hand motorcycle inspection.
Flanders on top
December was also a good month for used motorcycles, with an increase of +13.7% (compared to 2023). This means a decrease of -65% compared to December 2022, the month in which many second-hand motorcycles were registered last minute before the legislation on used motorcycle inspections came into effect on January 1st, 2023.
Flanders remains the largest second-hand market in 2024 (60.5%), with Wallonia at 32.2%, and Brussels at 7.4%. Registrations increased in almost all provinces: from a modest +3% in Limburg to +10,1% in West Flanders.
Largest market share for 125 cc
All classes increased compared to last year, but the market share of the 125 cc class (31.5%) remains the largest, which is a good sign because this category usually represents the motorcyclists of the future.
When we add up the new and used registrations, it is clear that 2024 (with 90,328 units, +6,321 units) is doing better than last year but is still 17,813 units behind 2022. Honda, Yamaha, and BMW are the most popular brands in the second-hand market.
