City of Hamburg signs €2,8 billion metro contract with Alstom

French rail group Alstom has signed a €2,8 billion framework contract with German public transport company Hamburger Hochbahn. The contract includes the supply of 374 new metro trains for fully automated or semi-automated operation for Hamburg’s city metro.

The DT6 metros will be produced at Alstom’s Salzgitter site in Germany starting in 2026. The first vehicles are scheduled for delivery in early 2028.

270,000 passengers every day

The metro vehicles, which include modern information systems, air conditioning, USB charging points, and panoramic windows, are intended for driverless operation on the new U5 line, which is currently under construction and will run over 25 km.

Consequently, the contract also includes the installation of the latest generation of communication-based train control signaling systems (CBTC), which will improve punctuality, frequency, and energy efficiency.

The first section of the new U5 line is scheduled for commissioning in 2029. Once the 23 stations are completed, the line will be able to serve around 270,000 passengers every day while operating at 90-second intervals.

Also deals with London and Israel

In June, Alstom won another €430 million contract for the London Underground. Alstom will supply and maintain ten new nine-carriage Aventra trains for London’s Elizabeth Line until 2046.

The new trains will be assembled at the historic Derby Litchurch Lane Works, Alstom’s largest production site in the world. The UK Department for Transport will fund them with £220,5 million (€261 million).

In May, Alstom signed a contract for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a tramway between Haifa and Nazareth in northern Israel. The contract, worth more than €700 million, includes the supply of 54 trams. The 41 km long tramline has 20 stations and is expected to carry 120,000 passengers a day.
