VW ID. Buzz gets new motors, batteries, and a cheaper base model

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has significantly expanded the ID. Buzz’s model range. Five new variants are available: the sporty ID, two new base models with a smaller battery and a lower price, the Buzz GTX in short—and long-wheelbase versions, and a four-wheel drive variant of the ID. Buzz Cargo. The rear motor of the ‘regular’ ID. Buzz has also been upgraded.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is based on the same MEB platform as models like the ID.7 and the Skoda Enyaq, it only makes sense to bring the same upgrades to the funky electric van as with the rest of the range. And that includes a long-awaited cheaper base model, although ‘cheap’ is relative.

Faster, more efficient Pro model

To start, the new APP550 electric drive unit makes its way to the ID Buzz Pro, increasing power from 150 kW (204 hp) to 210 kW (286 hp). This not only aids performance (0-100 km/hour in 7.6 seconds compared to 10.2 seconds), but the new motor is also more efficient. The WLTP range is around 460 km compared to 423 km for the old model, also aided by a new 79 kWh battery (vs. 77 kWh).

Cheaper Pure and Freestyle versions

For clients looking for a cheaper electric van, the ID. Buzz is now also available as the Pure and Freestyle versions. They feature a 125 kW (170 hp) rear motor, a smaller 59 kWh battery, and a range of around 330 km. This takes the price down to €49,998 (including VAT) for the Freestyle, compared to the current starting price of €56,700.

GTX and Cargo 4Motion

Next, the new top-of-the-line ID Buzz GTX is launched. It features a dual-motor drivetrain with 250 kW (340 hp) on tap. Performance is better (0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds), but this four-wheel drive model also features a higher maximum towing capacity of 1,800 kg, an increase of 800 kg compared to the regular Buzz.

The GTX is available in short—and long-wheelbase models, although the LWB must sacrifice 200 kg of towing capacity. For professional customers, the ID. Buzz Cargo 4Motion features the same drivetrain but without the sporty accents.

Presales of the ID. Buzz GTX and ID. Buzz Cargo 4Motion has already started, while the new ID. Buzz Pure and Freestyle can be ordered from 3 September. The first deliveries, including the updated 210 kW middle-of-the-ground variants, are expected by October 2024.
