Chinese-owned MG is teasing the launch of a new model. The future ZS compact SUV will be officially announced on August 28th. However, we already know it’ll be hybrid only. The popular crossover is said to gain the powertrain from the recently launched MG3 Hybrid+.
With just a teaser published on social media, MG Motors isn’t saying much. It’s unknown whether MG will launch a cheaper, gasoline-only version. The ZS EV will have a replacement; however, it might not share the same platform as the hybrid.
Red, with a hint of MG3
We’ll have to wait six days to see the new MG ZS in all its glory. However, the short video published on the group’s social media platforms is very revealing. The front fascia is fully shown, and we can easily spot the resemblance with the recently launched MG3 city car. The ZS features the same large grill and slim headlight units. This time, in red.
Unlike its predecessor, the MG logo now sits atop the grill and connects with the hood—a feature shared with the recently updated MG HS. For the rear and side profiles, our imagination has to work harder.
The long hood and rising sideline in the rear quarter windows are easy to spot. We don’t know if the ZS has grown compared to its predecessor. At the rear, we can spot the shape of the rear lights and, more importantly, a ‘hybrid+’ badge.
Hybrid to begin with
This badge clearly states that the future MG ZS will use the same powertrain as the recently launched MG3 Hybrid+. That powertrain uses a 102-hp 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, a 109-hp electric motor, and a 1,83-kWh battery.
All are combined through a three-speed automatic gearbox to produce 190 hp and 425 Nm of torque—quite potent for an urban car and more than enough for a compact crossover.
The current MG ZS was initially launched as an electric motor, named ZS EV. A cheaper, gasoline-only version was added, making the ZS a perfect contestant to the Dacia Duster.
This new generation will certainly compete with the Duster Hybrid 140. Prices haven’t been announced yet, nor has the production of a gasoline version. The current ZS EV is said to be replaced by an electric SUV of the same size based on the MG4 platform.
